A three-vehicle collision occurred on Jackson Road (Highway 16) in Rancho Murieta between the Murieta South and North gates on Saturday, Sept. 6, leaving one passenger dead, two drivers with critical injuries and a driver and passenger with minor injuries.
The accident occurred at 4:52 p.m., and Highway 16 was closed to traffic and did not reopen until approximately 8:30 p.m. that evening.
Battalion Chief Monte Ernst, with Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District (Sac Metro) said, “We were advised that we had four patients - one deceased, two critical and two minor. The scene was declared a multi-casualty incident (MCI) because of the severity of the injured.”
The California Highway Patrol reported that a 1993 Toyota Previa, 2004 Lexus 300 SUV and a 2005 Pontiac Vibe were all involved in the accident.
According to Lieutenant Greg Ferrero with the CHP, the Toyota was traveling westbound and driven by a 51-year-old male out of Williams, Calif. with a 41-year-old passenger, also out of Williams.
"The silver Toyota Previa crossed the double yellow in the path of the Lexus," said Ferrero. The Lexus, traveling eastbound, was driven by a 54-year-old female out of Rancho Murieta.
"The Lexus attempted to avoid a collision and careened onto the south shoulder where it rolled over," Lt. Ferrero said. “The driver was wearing a seatbelt.”
The Lexus was sideswiped as the driver attempted to avoid a collision and, according to the CHP, the Toyota then collided head-on with the Pontiac Vibe traveling eastbound behind the Lexus. The Pontiac was driven by a 48-year-old female out of Valley Springs with an 11-year-old passenger.
The passenger of the Toyota Previa was ejected and died at the scene. According to Lt. Ferrero, the passenger and driver of the Toyota were not wearing seatbelts. The driver of the Vibe and her passenger were transported to Mercy San Juan Hospital with complaints of pain and what appeared to be minor injuries.
The female driver of the Lexus sustained serious injuries, as did the male driver of the Toyota. According to Ernst, Sac Metro was first on the scene with a grass unit from Sac Metro Station 59 and Medic 59 transported one of the critically injured persons to UC Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) and the other critical patient to UCDMC by air ambulance.
At the hospital, the driver of the Toyota was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. The names of the victims have been withheld at press time, and the accident is currently still under investigation.
