Members of the Wilton History Group (WHG) were pleased to hear of a $400 donation received from the Dillard Store for the group’s Wilton History Day. Word of the donation came at the WHG Monday, April 26 meeting.
The donation is designated to cover the costs of using Dillard Elementary School’s multi-purpose room for the October event. WHG secretary Bonnie Rose reported the donation to the group and said that a letter of thanks had been sent to Vijay Singh, owner of the Dillard Store. “The Dillard Store has made a generous donation for our Wilton History Day,” Rose said. “This donation goes toward the building and janitorial services.”
Rose also reported that the group had received a donation from the Wilton Service Center VIPS (Volunteers in Partnership with the Sheriff) for the fifth annual rooster crowing contest coordinated by WHG members Wayne Gallup and Gretchen Golightly. Donations have been received from four Wilton couples to cover music for History Day.
In her report on History Day, Rose announced that member Kass Bergmann will handle public relations for the event, WHG president Lorraine Robinson will handle advertising and member Jim Ring, Jr. will serve as master of ceremonies.
Rose also made a call for volunteers to help with the military display, compiling the event program and staffing the early Wilton home exhibit. Wilton History Day is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9 and includes an old-fashioned spelling bee and essay contest; farmer’s market; truck restoration project display; video display and display of items of interest from the 1880s to the 1920s.
In other business, member Judy Cassidy reported on the success of the group’s rummage sale - their fundraiser held April 10. “The best thing about the rummage sale was it did not rain,” Cassity said. “Everyone worked hard, we had a lot of people visiting with each other and it was a lot of fun.” Cassity reported that the group raised almost $1300, which will be given to the WHG Truck Restoration Committee to help finish the restoration of a 1946 Dodge farm truck.
As part of the report on the rummage sale, Rose said that the WHG had sent a letter to the Wilton Service Center thanking Sacramento County deputies Garth Lynch and John Ilaga for their help patrolling before the sale. “It was the very best in community policing,” she said.
Members also decided on a name for the group’s quarterly newsletter, which is being produced under the direction of Rose and debuted this past quarter. After many suggestions, the group voted to call their newsletter The Wilton Historian. The newsletter will be available to all members and recaps the group’s activities and upcoming events. Copies are also available at the Dillard Store for residents who wish to know more about the WHG.
Under new business, the WHG recognized member Bill Kutzer for his work with Wilton Action Group (WAG). Kutzer complimented the Wilton community for its involvement and dedication to the WAG campaign to remove the Cosumnes River floodplain from Elk Grove’s Sphere of Influence application. “One thing that stands out is that Wilton folks showed up. Our people really filled up the council room and hallways,” Kutzer said. “Having those numbers helped carry the day. It just goes to show that every once in a while the good guys win one.”
Kutzer announced that WAG is planning an ice cream social on Friday, June 11. “It is a chance for WAG people to visit and say yeah for us,” he said. Kutzer also announced a barbecue dinner on Saturday, June 12 as a fundraiser.
Donated items to the WHG for the month of March included dress forms, information on the Sheldon Raiders and WAG information and photos. The group also discussed a new tee-shirt design for sale at the History Day and Robinson asked those present to bring ideas to the May meeting.
The next meeting of the WHG will be Monday, May 24 at 7 p.m. at Dillard Elementary School library.
