An overturned and fire-damaged port-a-potty was found at Lake Clementia Park in Rancho Murieta in the early morning hours of April 17. The outhouse was found by an unidentified fisherman who reported it to Rancho Murieta Community Services District Security Dept. No injuries were reported.
According to Security Chief Greg Remson, the responding patrol officer found the remains of a device with intact printing on it upon investigating the scene. The printing identified the device as a non-explosive smoke bomb.
The device had burned a hole through the lower wall of the outhouse and melted the plastic dispensers for the paper seat covers and toilet paper.
According to Captain Christian Pebbles of Sacramento Metro Fire Department (SMFD), there was no evidence on which to base an investigation. “If there was something to go on here we may have opened an investigation, although we have much more serious arson cases that require our resources,” Pebbles said. “But there were no injuries and no serious damage - and no prints or other information to lead us anywhere. We have no resources for a cold case like this.”
Pebbles also said that SMFD was not called to the scene. Photos were taken, and the evidence was delivered to Station 59 along with the security officer’s report.
Remson acknowledged that this is not typical procedure. “Normally we would call them (SMFD) out to see if the situation warranted an investigation,” Remson said. “This type of thing is usually malicious mischief on the part of juveniles. Our patrol made a judgment call.”
Any residents who can provide further information on this incident are asked to call the CSD Security Dept. at (916) 354-2273.
