Members of the Wilton History Group (WHG) met Monday, Sept. 22 to discuss ongoing projects. Member Gene Rose briefed the group on efforts to obtain the Wilton Hall as a multi-use center for the community of Wilton.
According to Rose, two WHG representatives met with Sacramento County Supervisor Don Nottoli two months ago. Although it had been agreed that Nottoli would work with the Wilton family interested in helping with the financing, an actual meeting had not been set up. “At this point, Supervisor Nottoli will get a hold of the family,” Rose said, “He will set up a meeting between the WHG, the county and the family.”
Rose also presented a resolution regarding the Wilton Hall and asked members to approve or disapprove with recommendations. In essence, Rose proposed that the WHG secure the funds to purchase the hall and then renovate before donating to the county.
Rose estimated it would take eight years to restore the hall. “The building would then be donated to the county, and WHG would use it and serve as custodian,” he said. “If the county were to sell, the WHG would be given first consideration.”
He also stated that it is common practice for historical societies to meet in facilities owned by the county. The resolution to take steps to acquire the hall passed unanimously. “Our efforts show we want to acquire the hall and make good use of it,” said Jim Ring, Jr., WHG president.
Rose also reported that the WHG had received notices of three events celebrating history during the month of October, including a trip to the gaslight factory in Grass Valley sponsored by the Elk Grove Historical Society. Rose also mentioned a lantern tour of an old cemetery, and a talk at the California State Library regarding noted California stagecoach drivers.
In other business, the group discussed the proposed Wilton Park. Citing what the Wilton-Cosumnes Parks and Recreation Advisory Council is experiencing in getting a well on the park site on Clay Station Road, Rose said, “Once the county takes ownership, there are all kinds of hoops to jump through.”
Member Alice Kutzer thanked the volunteers of History Day. “I want to thank everyone for all their work,” she said. “Our members have put in many hours.” The WHG also welcomed new members and Wilton residents Joy and Mike Kraynak.
The next meeting of the WHG will be Monday, Oct. 27 at Dillard Elementary School library.
