The Elk Grove Unified School District has opened the enrollment for an exciting new school – the EGUSD Virtual Academy. Students enrolled in the EGUSD Virtual Academy will get the flexibility of an online education using the nationally recognized K-12 curriculum. The curriculum is provided under the guidance of highly qualified Elk Grove Unified teachers. Unlike other online programs, the EGUSD Virtual Academy is offered through an award-winning school district with a proven track record of educational excellence.
An open house will be held June 16 at 9 a.m. at Cosumnes Oaks High School Library at 8350 Lotz Parkway, Elk Grove.
EGUSD Superintendent Steven M. Ladd, Ed.D. said the move by the district reflects the times. “At Elk Grove Unified, we pride ourselves on using innovative thinking to continue to enhance the education of our students,” Ladd said. “The delivery of education must evolve with the times, and the EGUSD Virtual Academy represents a new educational option for our district."
Ladd continued, "This academy will allow students in kindergarten through 12th grade to experience teaching and learning through a virtual school.”
The online nature of the program will allow Elk Grove Unified to offer the academy to more students in the area. The free educational program is available to any student in grades K-12 in Sacramento – along with students in the neighboring counties of Amador, Contra Costa, El Dorado, Placer, San Joaquin, Solano, Sutter and Yolo.
“The curriculum in the EGUSD Virtual Academy is a beautiful blend of high standards and individual flexibility,” said Anne Zeman, Ed.D., director of Curriculum and Professional Learning for the district. EGUSD has partnered with K-12, a nationally recognized online learning program, for online curricular materials.
“Our teachers in the Virtual Academy supplement the K-12 materials to meet the rigor and breadth of EGUSD’s standards. Highly qualified teachers provide support to help the students meet these standards,” Zeman said. “Because of the unique opportunity to adjust pacing and to match the needs and style of each student, the curriculum EGUSD Virtual Academy meets the needs of college and career-bound students.”
Although the majority of the program’s work will take place online, students will also have the opportunity to meet with their teachers in person. Students and parents will be able to interact directly with teachers at one of five convenient locations located throughout the district.
The five school sites serving EGUSD Virtual Academy students are: Adult & Community Education, C.W. Dillard Elementary School, Las Flores High School, Elizabeth Pinkerton Middle School and Pleasant Grove Elementary School.
Christy Moustris, director of Alternative Education and principal of the EGUSD Virtual Academy stressed the individual nature of the system “The EGUSD Virtual Academy is an excellent option for students and parents seeking a program conducive to online independent studies,” she said. “Each Virtual Academy student will receive an individualized course of study plan created just for them, with all coursework available to students online. The Virtual Academy is the first online school in the district.”
In addition to courses online, students will have access to the many Regional Occupation Program (ROP) courses, which provide career technical education options offered through EGUSD schools.
