C.W. Dillard Elementary School hosted Camp Invention June 7-11 where elementary-aged children took things apart and put them back together to see how they work. This is one way young inventors are born, and approximately 25 participants attended the camp.
Instructor Jodi Boyle was impressed with the students’ creative enthusiasm. “I think this has been the best group of inventors so far,” Boyle said.
Each day, the children rotated through five incorporated modules that inspired them to apply imaginative and creative thinking to solve real-world challenges through hands-on activities.
The last day of camp concluded with a showcase in the school’s multipurpose room where parents and family came to view the students’ original inventions. Some of these inventions included robots, a waffle maker and model roller coasters.
The youngsters also had the opportunity to create their own sports equipment in order to play popular games such as Lacrosse. The students were required to log the daily progress of the invention they were assembling in a journal.
The "I Can Invent" module appeared to have been the most popular among the students, according to Boyle. “The I Can Invent is a huge draw for the kids,” she said. Students donned goggles and picked up real tools to take apart a broken machine, later using the parts to construct their own invention.
Alexis Dodson, 6, agreed that taking things apart and putting them together was a lot of fun. “My favorite part is inventing,” she said.
