Plumes of thick black smoke alerted many neighbors of fire near the 9000 block of Alta Mesa Road in Wilton in the early evening of Monday, June 28. According to Wilton Fire Protection District (WFD) Chief Tom Dark, crews were dispatched at 7:44 p.m.
The fire consumed about an eighth of an acre, but the real damage was to vehicles and tires stored on the property. Containers and combustible fluids were also consumed. “The fire started near some outbuildings, and our fire crews were able to keep the fire from destroying a shop on the property,” Dark said. “Our firefighters did a good job of saving the building.”
Dark said the fire was caused by a lawnmower that malfunctioned. “According to neighbors, the guy’s mower blew up,” Dark said. “That could happen to anybody.”
WFD engines responding included Battalion Chief 81, grass 281, grass 81, grass 84 and water tender 81. The scene was cleared at 9:21 p.m.
Chief Dark cautions homeowners that mowing should be done before 10 a.m. during dry summer months. “Mow before 10 a.m. before the humidity starts to drop,” he said. “If you hit a rock with your blade, it could start a fire.”
