Food, drinks, music and holiday cheer filled the rooms of Salon T on Thursday, Dec. 4 during their community open house. Visitors celebrated the opening of the new location in Sloughhouse next to Dixie’s Southern Comfort Antiques and Magic Carpet Travel on Meiss Road off Highway 16.
Salon T will offer a variety haircutting, styling and coloring options as well as facials, waxing and make-up application.
The rustic home appears an unlikely location for a salon, but owner Gail Tomson, who has a background in design, has converted the 1846 country home into a chic space.
With cool shades of blue, silver and occasionally green accents, the salon has the relaxing feel of a day spa and the comfortable design of a home. Each hair station is located in its own room, as is the hair washing station and the esthetician center. One room stands open for a potential expansion to include nail care.
The design works with the architecture of the home rather than against it, providing patrons with a sense of privacy as they receive haircuts or facials, while leaving enough open space for free communication between everyone if so desired.
During the open house, the kitchen served as a focal point for food and drinks as guests were laughing freely and enjoying one another’s company. “This is a really lovely event, and we’re so happy that we could be here to celebrate,” said resident Erica Kremer. Musicians Lance Taber and John Pewely also lent their talents to the evening, playing guitar to an appreciative audience.
Perhaps the greatest reason to celebrate is that the entire transformation, from gutting to opening, happened in a mere five weeks. Salon T first opened it’s original location last April in one of the hangers near the RM Airport, but because of zoning complications were told that they had to move out in September.
“Rancho Murieta isn’t a huge place, and there aren’t that many buildings that could work for a salon," said Tomson. "I heard about the opening in the building in Sloughhouse from one of my clients and jumped at the chance.”
The salon opened its doors in the new location the first week of November. Pictures from the overhaul were displayed at the open house so that guests could see the dramatic changes.
In addition to the open house held on Thursday, Salon T offered a jewelry sale featuring Native American pieces during the weekend of Dec. 6 and 7. The silver and turquoise pieces were first sold at a shop in Las Vegas called the Tee Pee, which closed in the 1980s. Left in a barn for 20 years, the family who owned them finally decided to sell them to a man in Rocklin named Jeff Voracek. “The pieces are truly beautiful, made from American mined turquoise that doesn’t really exist anymore," said Tomson. "Besides that, Jeff is letting us sell them at the 80's prices and then take almost half off in addition to that. We’ve had really great sales so far.”
Tomson’s family was there as well to support the sale, including daughter Ellen who was wearing many of her mom's favorite jewelry selections. “It’s been really fun to be here with my family to support my mom. And really, this stuff is so nice it’s hard to resist,” she said. Salon T will continue to offer unique sales in the future along with the salon services it offers day to day.
Stylist Kari Kremer was excited about an upcoming continuing education opportunity. “I’m going to spend a weekend with the Paul Mitchell Academy, and I’m going to come back with all of the cutting edge looks. It’s going to be fun, and I’m excited to come back with that new knowledge,” said Kremer. Tomson added that it was an honor to be accepted into a Paul Mitchell class.
A close-knit family of employees, both Kremer and esthetician Nicole Echeverria were pleased with the new space. “It creates a comfortable atmosphere where I think people will love to come. I know I like being in the space,” sad Echiverria, whose room is geared toward relaxation. “I think that people can tell that we like being here and like what we do too, which always makes for a better atmosphere,” added Kremer.
